Most of us take it for granted that math works—that scientists can devise formulas to describe subatomic events or that engineers can calculate paths for space­craft. We accept the view, initially espoused by Galileo, that mathematics is the language of science and expect that its grammar explains experimental results and even predicts novel phenomena. The power of mathematics, though, is nothing short of astonishing. Consider, for example, Scottish physicist James Clerk Maxwell’s famed equations: not only do these four expressions summarize all that was known of electromagnetism in the 1860s, they also anticipated the existence of radio waves two decades before German physicist Heinrich Hertz detected them. Very few languages are as effective, able to articulate volumes’ worth of material so succinctly and with such precision. Albert Einstein pondered, “How is it possible that mathematics, a product of human thought that is independent of experience, fits so excellently the objects of physical reality?”…

Die zelluläre Autophagie, also die Fähigkeit einer Zelle, eigene Bestandteile abzubauen, ist schon länger bekannt. Es handelt sich dabei um einen notwendigen Mechanismus, der z.B. nicht mehr benötigte Zellorganellen abbaut um Platz für Neues zu schaffen. Vor allem durch Hungern oder Fasten wird die Autophagie angeregt. Forscher haben laut Spektrumdirekt nun herausgefunden, dass auch Hirnzellen zur Autophagie fähig sind.

Wenn wir nicht genügend Nahrung zu uns nehmen, gibt unser Organismus an verschiedene Organe ein Hungersignal. Im Gehirn wird dieser Warnruf über einen geradezu archaisch anmutenden Mechanismus ausgelöst: Die unterversorgten Neurone verleiben sich Teile ihrer selbst ein und setzen dabei Lipide frei, die anderen Zellen den Versorgungsnotstand signalisieren. Diese besondere Form der zellulären Autophagie beschreiben nun Rajat Singh und seine Kollegen vom Albert Einstein College in New York…

Dass unsere Existenz in einer Art Hologramm stattfindet, klingt nach einem Science Fiction-Film. Doch diese Theorie hat ernstzunehmende Verfechter und könnte sich schon bald als wahr herausstellen. Der NewScientist geht ihr in diesem Artikel auf den Grund:

TAKE a look around you. The walls, the chair you’re sitting in, your own body – they all seem real and solid. Yet there is a possibility that everything we see in the universe – including you and me – may be nothing more than a hologram.

It sounds preposterous, yet there is already some evidence that it may be true, and we could know for sure within a couple of years. If it does turn out to be the case, it would turn our common-sense conception of reality inside out.

The idea has a long history, stemming from an apparent paradox posed by Stephen Hawking’s work in the 1970s. He discovered that black holes slowly radiate their mass away. This Hawking radiation appears to carry no information, however, raising the question of what happens to the information that described the original star once the black hole evaporates. It is a cornerstone of physics that information cannot be destroyed…

Die Internetplattform Academic Earth bietet zahlreiche Video-Vorlesungen der großen Universitäten, wie z.B. Yale, Harvard und Stanford, zu unterschiedlichen Themen an. Der Philosoph Alva Noë ist der Meinung, dass weit mehr geschlechterspezifische Eigenschaften kulturell geprägt sind, als bisher angenommen. Ein sehr interessanter Blogeintrag:

When psychologist Adam Galinksy and his collaborator at Northwestern University asked subjects to carry out this sort of exercise, they made a startling finding. After the exercise, subjects were asked to characterize themselves. Those individuals who had imaginatively adopted the perspective of the professor were more likely to describe themselves as clever than those who had been assigned the cheerleader persona. And those who had adopted the cheerleader perspective, were correspondingly more likely to describe themselves as gorgeous…
